We’re cycling from Land’s End (Cornwall) to John O’Groats (Scotland) – from the most South-Westerly point on the UK mainland to the most North-Easterly point. This is a distance of just under 900 miles, and we are planning to do it in just nine days from 15th September to 23rd September 2012 . It doesn’t take Stephen Hawking to work out that that’s an average of 100 miles a day. Yikes.
Land’s End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) is a popular challenge for cyclists, and can be done in a variety of different ways. To put what we’re doing into perspective, the record is just over 44 hours on a bike, and around 6.5 days on a unicycle – it’s also been done on a skateboard, and I’m sure before long some whacky clown will do it on a space hopper. Most people do the ride over a 14 day period, which is a reasonable challenge for any amateur cyclist.

There are organised events that riders can sign up to – these normally have a dedicated bike mechanic, phsyio and all food and accommodation all provided. However, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to take all the planning and cost on ourselves. This means that every penny we raise for charity goes to the charity itself – not the cost of the trip. We’re staying in budget hotels en route, and we’re buying a minibus to transport us to and from start/finish points, and to be there for support on the way with the help of our ‘support crew’ of one.

We’re raising money for the Neuroblastoma Society – please have a look the page on our site and also learn about four year-old Alex Sharp who has had Neuroblastoma for over half his life.

We’ll update the blog at least daily, so please subscribe to the posts and you’ll get the latest news on where we are and how we’re getting on.

  1. Come on you wannabe Bradley Wiggins’s – good luck to you all

  2. I reckon that kite surfing down the M6 would make the journey a little easier.

  3. Good luck team! Gutted I won’t be with you, but be sure I’ll be following your progress from the comfort of my sofa..

  4. ..and on facebook and twitter!

  5. Enjoy the trip team, it will be immense. Bad luck with the arm Ian, these things happen.

Joe – your consignment of EPO is on its way to that address you gave me in Watford.

    Some quotes for you……..

“It never gets easier, you just go faster.”
    Greg LeMond

When asked if it was better technique to mash a big gear or spin a small gear, Eddy Merckx thought for a moment and said
“Its better to spin a big gear.”

“Eat before you are hungry. Drink before you are thirsty. Rest before you are tired. Cover up before you are cold. Peel off before you are hot. Don’t drink or smoke on tour. Never ride just to prove yourself.”
    Paul de Vivie

  6. Good luck all! Im actually delighted I wont be joining you… I mean at your age you should be taking up golf and living the expat lifestyle and not paying tax. Oh wait a second…..

Seriously though, you’re all doing something quite remarkable and I wish you loads of success. I can’t wait for the extras on your DVD….

  7. Good luck – I’m very jealous. Looking forward to seeing the pictures and reading the blog. We will be with you all the way !

  8. Hello Boys, wishing all the best for your epic trip. I wish I was coming with you to give you all a smack on the bottom when it gets hard work. Someone said to me before my Ironman, ‘Make sure you savour every moment. It’s not often you will be riding round the Austria mountains and swimming in an Alpine lake!’ It was very sound advice. Enjoy every moment, even when the going gets tough, because, when will you next be with 5 great mates, cycling in our fair isle raising money for a little man who needs some help. You will remember it forever and it is a fantastic achievement. (one to add to my list as well!!). My motto is ‘Life is for living and making the most out of every day’. You can have a cuppa in front of the telly any night of the week! You might even inspire some other people who wouldn’t even think it was possible to get up and out there and have some fun.
Have so much fun and keep safe. Lots of love to you all Vics xxxxxx

  9. Lisa (ed's wife!)

SO very proud of you all and wishing you all the very best of luck on your journey. Am praying that the sun shines, your various niggles and twinges stay at bay and most of all, with all the time you’ll be spending together, you do not come up with an idea for challenge 2013!! Take great care. x.x.x.
